ISO determines how much light the camera will let into an image. A low ISO will make the image dark and hard to see were as a higher ISO will let the image be lighted however as a side effect of a higher ISo the image apperars more grainer. ISO is best used with shutter speed for if you have a low ISO and let the cameras shutter stay open longer you will let light in but it will not be to much light. Higher ISO are used for low light conditions such as night portraits and concerts. In short you most have a balance between the three settings aperture ISO and shutter speed in order to get the desired results.
